Elbert, Co. was named for Territorial Governor and State Supreme Court Justice Samuel H. Elbert. The town was a bustling center until a May 31st, 1935, flood washed away half of the town. The flood was caused by an overflow of Kiowa Creek, which lies next to the town. This cattle-ranching community in eastern Colorado exudes friendliness and down-home hospitality.

During the summer, Elbert is much busier due to a nearby Boy Scout Camp, which has 10,000 visitors every summer. The annual Elbert County Fair takes place here each summer, along with various rodeos. The closest recreational facility is Castlewood Canyon State Park, which is a popular spot for hiking, technical rock climbing and bird watching.
