Villa Grove, Co., at first glance, appears but a bump in the road; however, upon further exploration, visitors to this quiet village will see its true character. The northern gateway to the ancient San Luis Valley, Villa Grove is surrounded by national forests and massive peaks to the east. The town was founded by Civil War veterans in 1863 and became a lively stop for the area's narrow gauge railroad. Today, the agricultural and art town might be better characterized as sleepy.
For centuries, the picturesque village and its surrounding natural wonders have moved artists. Today a few local artisans have opened their homes and studios to visitors. Two local B&Bs function as cozy retreats and offer an introduction to the art of Raku pottery.
Hiking trails abound in San Isabel National Forest and Hayden Pass, just east of town, is a popular launch point for hang gliding.
