Alamosa, Co. was established in May, 1878 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and quickly became an important rail center. Alamosa, which means "full of cottonwoods" in Spanish, is now a notable tourist town with many nearby attractions including the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Alamosa hosts a Sunshine Summerfest on the Rio Festival which occurs the first weekend in June.
Alamosa is an outdoor enthusiasts' dream surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and numerous recreation opportunities. A new excursion train runs daily during the summer from Alamosa to La Veta. This route takes you through breathtaking country you can’t see from the highway.
