Arvada, Co. was established in 1904 but the railroad came 34 years earlier. In 1870, the Colorado Central Railroad laid tracks through the area of Ralston Creek on its route from Golden to link up with the Kansas Pacific Railroad and the Denver Pacific Railroad at Jersey Junction, 3 miles (5 km) north of Denver. Benjamin F. Wadsworth and Louis A. Reno platted the Ralston Point townsite along the railroad. To avoid confusion with other communities along Ralston Creek, Ralston Point was soon renamed Arvada at the suggestion of Wadsworth's wife, Mary, in honor of her brother-in-law, Hiram Arvada Haskin. Benjamin Wadsworth became the first postmaster of Arvada. Colorado was granted statehood in 1876, and the Town of Arvada was formally incorporated in 1904. A vibrant agricultural community, Arvada claimed the title "Celery Capital of the World."
Today, a blend of historic and modern architecture makes for a suburb mindful of its small-town roots. The Arvada Historical Society provides a tour of old downtown, including the 1926 Arvada Flour Mill, now on the National Register of Historic Places.
While in the area, visit the 105,000-square-foot Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Featuring a museum, two art galleries, performing arts theaters and classrooms for hundreds of art education programs, this complex is an exciting addition to the community. Each summer, the center's outdoor concerts are a big draw.
