Trinidad, Co., nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains halfway between Santa Fe and Denver, retains its Old West character and the vitality of its pioneering days on the Santa Fe Trail.

Trinidad was a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and home to trappers, traders and early ranchers. In the 1800s, thousands passed through Trinidad many en route from New Mexico to Denver (now I-25). In 1882, that group included Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, fresh from the infamous Vendetta Ride and running from Arizona authorities; their pal Bat Masterson was Trinidad’s town marshal.

Few towns in Colorado have undergone such dramatic transformations in recent years as Trinidad. The community celebrates its colorful past while embracing new public projects. Visitors find gracious parks among winding brick streets and broad avenues. A wealth of historic architecture and outstanding history, art history, and archaeological museums depict how the West was once. Musical and gallery events occur throughout the year, and the town enjoys the finest in professional theatre. Boutiques offer a wide array of goods in the best tradition of a historic center of trade.

The city celebrates that heritage by hosting events like the Santa Fe Trail Festival and the County Rodeo and Fair, which dates back to 1910.

Trinidad is also the starting point for the Scenic Highway of Legends, a historic drive over passes and through villages to Walsenburg to the north.

The Trinidad Lake State Recreation Area offers camping and other outdoor activities, as does the Comanche National Grasslands to the east.
