The City of Black Hawk Fire Department, established in 1879, was originally a Volunteer Department. With the introduction of limited stakes gaming in 1991, business, development, and call volume increased. In 1992, the Chief went from volunteer status to a paid part-time employee. From 1992 to 1993 the City increased rapidly necessitating a full-time position for the Chief as well as an Assistant Chief and a Secretary. In 1994 another increase was made and 4 full-time firefighters were hired. Now, the Black Hawk Fire Department is a combination of part-time and full-time firefighters and full-time paramedics. The department office is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and currently staffs the Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, and Administrative Assistant. The department is run out of 1 station with 4 pieces of fire apparatus, and is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with 3 Lieutenants, 18 Firefighters, 6 Reserve Firefighters, and 6 Gilpin Ambulance, Inc. Paramedics. The Black Hawk Fire Department responds to fires, alarms, medical emergencies, rescue/extrication, automobile accidents, HazMat, service calls, and building inspections. Although Black Hawk has only 100 residents, the industry of gaming causes the daily population to swell up to 50,000. The Black Hawk Fire Department is dedicated and prepared to providing quality emergency services to the people who live, work, and travel through our area.
