The Durango Fire and Rescue Authority was established by intergovernmental agreement between the City of Durango, the Animas Fire Protection District and the Hermosa Cliff Fire Protection District. 2002 is the initial year of operations of the Authority, and is jointly funded by the three governmental entities.

Ambulance services formerly provided by Mercy Medical Center are now incorporated in the Durango Fire and Rescue Authority.
